In case you forgot, Thunderbolt had one issue with proper numbering, and then for some reason took over Son Of Vulcan‘s numbering (itself a takeover of a different title’s numbering) with #51. I don’t know what was happening at Charlton but this doesn’t seem like a good idea.
Thunderbolt Vol.3 #51
Charlton Comics (Group March/April, 1966)
“The Evil That Is Evila”
CREATOR/WRITER/ARTIST: PAM
According to the Grand Comic Database, PAM is (I guess) the pen name of Pete Morisi
A museum director asks Peter Cannon and some Egyptian archeology specialist named Dan Garrett (name sounds familiar) to help investigate a new mummy, of the forgotten Egyptian sorceress Evila, who claimed immortality. Exiled for his crimes, the Hooded One, whose face was partially burned after protecting the llamastery, sees this as his next plan for revenge on the outside world and Peter. He takes control of the professor’s mind and has him restore Evila to life. Then she takes over his mind (not a good day for Professor Karl) and later criminals to help build her new empire. Eventually enough trouble is cause that Thunderbolt finally goes to help, avoiding Evila’s traps, and winning a battle of wills that puts her back in mummy form.
What they got right: Holy crap, continuity. This is only…what, the second time we’ve seen this in a Charlton comic, when Ted Kord met Vic Sage in the comic they shared? Evila proves an interesting challenge for Thunderbolt, and we get the Hooded One’s backstory.
What they got wrong: Like the other meeting we don’t get a hero team-up. This is the kind of adventure right up the alley of this version of Blue Beetle, and seeing him team-up with Thunderbolt might have made up for being denied a Ted Kord Blue Beetle/Question crossover. Instead, Dan goes on some kind of cruise and misses the rest of the story.
What I think overall: This was a good outing for our hero. Looking forward to the next issue.
