Doesn’t look too fun for the guy hanging off of the board.

The Superfun Adventures Of Jax #1

AAM/Markosia (2011)

WRITER/ARTIST: Britt Snyder

LETTERER: Ian Sharman

After escaping some of the robots that have invaded their world of Natoon, Jax and her little fuzzy friend Ash are called before the big fish, Po-Pa. Before the planet’s balanced was maintained by Po-Pa and his opposite evil counterpart the Motheater. Now the Motheater has formed an alliance with the invading robots. Po-Pa sends Jax to the place where she’ll learn of what her destined role is, but their enemies send a giant mech to stop them. Jax loses her flying surfboard thing stopping it, and the two friends barely escape an attack by the Motheater himself before finding a cabin. And the owner doesn’t like strangers connected to energy blasts.

What they got right: The artwork is beautiful. I’d like to think the painted style is finally starting to find a footing in sequential art, something that I’ve complained about in previous comics using it. The characters seem fine as do the concept.

What they got wrong: The story itself is kind of weak. Stuff pretty much happens. I can follow what’s going on as far as sequence of events but I have more questions than Jax and Ash as to what any of this is about beyond the premise. The choice of deities (a giant fish and a creature that…eats moths I guess) feels kind of random. The world building could use a bit more construction.

What I think overall: At least for me this adventure doesn’t look all that fun. The art is the nicest thing I can say about it, but a comic is more than just visual. I don’t have any plans to continue this series.
