“Homo Aqua? What did you call me?”

Fathom: Kiani vol 2 #0

Aspen Comics (October, 2012)

I think I read this in the wrong order. I’m going by the dating at Drive Thru Comics, saying that this was updated on August 4, 2014 but first posted August 10, 2014. I don’t think I’m using the right info. I’ll have to remember to look into it before the next Fathom review.

“FATHOM” CREATOR: Michael Turner

WRITER: Vince Hernandez

ARTIST: Oliver Nome

COLORIST: John Starr

LETTERER: John Reed

After the events of the first volume and the “Dawn Of War” miniseries or event or whatever it was, Kiani had slain Cannon Hawke, the leader of the underwater people of the Blue. However, at some point in her past she came in contact with something called the Black, which allowed her to heal. This history her mentor, Casque, only shared with her and (without her knowledge) their current (no water pun intended) leader, Siphon. So when Aspen killed her to avenge Cannon, she instead became part of the Blue. Now she’s coming back, and Casque is worried all Kiani will come back for is revenge.

What they got right: This preview gives us a full story. That’s an improvement over the last book I reviewed. The art is very nice.

What they got wrong: Well, “wrong” by necessity since it is setting up this next miniseries, but it’s a lot of explaining things. The present day scenes, and there might be a narrative reason, are darker than the flashback scene. It’s not just being underwater because there are underwater moments in the flashback.

What I think overall: There’s some interesting lore here. Now if I can just review the rest of the free preview offerings I might be able to put something together.
