Since our last visit to Fathom the Blue managed to rescue their people with the help of Marqueses, who was really after their leader, Casque. This was during the “Dawn Of War” story according to the captions. I won’t spoil what this issue tells us happened in case you go to check it out, since I only have access to the free preview stuff. The short version is Kilani returns to report they’re both gone while a soldier who had met Aspen is trying to find her before Mayweather does. Cannon goes to another Blue kingdom he’s more friendly with so the escaped test subjects can heal before making the trip home. Cannon also asks Kilani if the same members of the Black that tried to capture Aspen, which upsets Kilani because she doesn’t see Aspen as the savior here.
What they got right: If you’re looking to a preview to give you an idea what’s going on, this does show you, directly or indirectly, all of the players involved. Mayweather is only mentioned but you can tell he and the Black are threats to the Blue. The art is good.
What they got wrong: If you were coming in completely blind on this one, you see a bunch of names with no context to them. I don’t know if the hard copy previews included them, but this digital copy should have had a section helping get potential new readers up to date with the series concept.
What I think overall: Someday I need to check this series out properly. It looks interesting. For now, just looking through more previews. It still beats anything I’ve heard about The War Between The Land And The Sea, anyway.
