Beginning with Sonic The Hedgehog #208 I started reviewing the various Sonic comics as their own article instead of reviewing my entire pull list once a week. You can find further reviews in the Today’s Comic feature, but I didn’t want to end this story arc for new readers to the site. This will give all my Sonic reviews their own spot, and that also makes the last of my physical comics until the next Free Comic Book Day or I get some funds and storage space to buy more comics. I still have plans and you’ll know next week which one I ultimately go with, as next week will also be the last of the Drive Thru Comics collection unless I get some new comics from that digital service. With that, the last Sonic comic review.

“Echoes Of The Past” finale
WRITER: Ian Flynn
PENCILER: Tracy Yardley
INKER: Jim Amash
COLORIST: Jason Jensen
LETTERER: Teresa Davidson
ASSISTANT EDITOR: Paul Kaminski
EDITOR: Mike Pellerito
Trapped by the Downunda Dark Egg Legion, the Downunda Freedom Fighters learns why Duck Bill joined Robotnik’s team, and he’s not really a traitor! His people basically decided to switch sides, but he’s been trying to sabotage Robotnik, and now the Iron Queen’s operation. The DFF and Chaotix escape, and Knuckles tracks down and (with help from Julie-Su) takes down Dr. Finitevus. The two hero groups go their separate ways, and Thrash goes to resume his original quest.
What they got right: This is a great finale to the arc. Bill’s switching sides makes perfect sense and ends on a happy note. Peace comes between Barby and Vector (although we don’t learn a lot about their past at this point) and the final battle between Knuckles and Finitevus is most satisfactory, giving you insight into both characters’ points of view while still being a darn good fight. It’s also nice to see that while Knuckles still wants to know more about his past and his peoples’ past he knows what his priority should be as both the Guardian of the Floating/Angel Island and as part of the Chaotix.
What they got wrong: Not spinning this into a new Knuckles the Echidna series. There is such a big world just with these characters apart from Sonic and his group of Mobians. These characters, and the Downunda Freedom Fighters, are going to waste with the potential they have. Of course, given that the Knuckles characters were probably the most affected by Ken Pender’s legal nonsense so he could take all his ideas out of the Archie comics and into a failed project of his own, that would have made more stuff to ruin later.
What I think overall: I only added a few things from the original review. In this re-readthrough I’ve been enjoying Sonic Universe more than the regular Sonic titles. I’ll still be going through the already reviewed comics and deciding whether or not to keep them, but I need to get what I’ve already sorted through sold. The bags are piling up. Keep an eye on The Clutter Reports sale section to see what ultimately goes. Now I’m trying to decide whether to add another service here in addition to Drive Thru’s replacement or get all of the comics reviewed in the weekly group into their own separate updated articles.
