Why yes, I do hate myself. Why do you ask?

Just a little commentary about Blackest Night. This actually isn’t the first time I’ve seen Johnny Sr turn evil. In Sergio Destroys DC (as in Sergio Aragones, as written by Mark Evanier), Johnny DC was so upset about how dark the DC Universe had become (look at it now) that he went all “90’s” on us and threatened to destroy everything. Think of him as Superboy-Prime, without the suck and obvious fanslap.

I’m not sure if it’s noticeable or not, but for the first three panels I actually used a set of inking pens I picked up a couple weeks ago. The tree branches were done with the brush pen and then recolored in Paint Shop Pro, where I do my coloring and lettering. (An old version that I have, because I find it easier to use in some projects than Adobe Photoshop. However, I’m thinking I should give Illustrator a shot.) The rest was done using the three different nibs in the 4 PITT artist pen set by Faber-Castell. (The brush pen being the fourth, and this time black instead of the gray one I snagged separately.) Jake and Leon, however, were done with the usual Sharpie ultra fine.

For Black Lantern Johnny DC, I messed with the font a bit, using black with some white outlining (although it actually came out the other way around, but I like it), while slightly graying the word balloons. The balloons are how the Black Lanterns speak in some of the sample pages I looked through, but outlining the letters was to add a personal touch.

I’m figuring out which of the nibs make the line I like best, so I’m getting closer. I’ll probably get into that more in the next Progress Report.
