It’s also a gift for the fans. I expect DC to return it as soon as possible.
It’s through Clark Kent the identity that we connect with Superman and Superman maintains his connection with humanity. It’s living life among people rather than above them (a long list of celebrities could follow) that keeps Clark humble, which is important to and for Superman. Meanwhile it’s those moments as Clark that we see there’s more to Superman than his powers and why he helps others the way that he does. Stripping him of that is a mistake made twice under DiDio’s reign. I’m just not convinced it’s going to stick since modern writers keep trying to make him a god rather than a man.
