BW Media Spotlight’s Best Of Year 13

Still catching up to the year I should have been celebrating last week. The past few years have been a mess so forgive me for missing out on my own anniversary two years in a row. Every year I usually celebrate my favorite articles over the past year. This year we’re looking at November 16, 2021 – November 15, 2022.

For the late comers, while recovering from a pair of hospital stays I came upon comic and geek blogs and thought they were really cool. Some of them even had the same thoughts I had when it came to storytelling and the same interests in the types of stories to discuss. When I noticed my comments were multiple paragraphs, I decided that rather than flood their blog I’d start my own. And here we are.

So which articles of two years ago do I think stand out? It’s a long list but should give newcomers the best example of what to expect around here. (Hi, by the way.) Thus it is time to get to it.

The Many, MANY Intros Of Spider-Man> Still The Most Famous

At first I was wondering “did I do the Disney Junior Spider-Man intro like I did for Batwheels and the Batman intros?” followed by “wait, did I ever cover the many Spider-Man intros?”. A quick check told me I didn’t. Guess what the next intro series is featuring.

I didn’t catch the airing of the original Spider-Man cartoon in 1967 because I wasn’t born until 1973. However, there were reruns of this show in syndication until at least the 1980s. I didn’t even get the syndicated 1981 cartoon in my area. They just kept running the original. This would be Spidey’s first appearance outside of the comics since his debut in 1962, in the final issue of Amazing Fantasy. Stan Lee’s boss didn’t want to do the comic because the idea of a teenager who wasn’t a sidekick and got his powers from a creepy thing like a spider wouldn’t work. Since it was the last issue of their horror anthology, Stan slipped it in, and suddenly it was a great idea because readers wanted more. Months later Amazing Spider-Man #1 hit stands and Peter Parker has been a success ever since.

The first cartoon aired on ABC for three seasons, created by Grantray-Lawrence Animation. The theme song has never really gone away, homaged in movies and even reworked in some later shows and video games. What makes it work so well?

MatPat Tries To Save The MCU…But I Have Some Notes

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a mess. Ignoring that Sony still has the Spider titles (and ruining them), Marvel Studios has seen a once beloved shared universe, a concept so popular (and taken from the comics) that other studios tried–and failed–to imitate it. DC still hopes to with the Gunniverse after the failure of the Snyderverse. There are a number of reasons why, which many commentators, including me, have gone over, chronicling the fall of a once beloved cinema brand.

Once again, MatPat is here to attempt to repair the damage, and nobody can call him part of this or that “Gate” because he isn’t all that political and just calls what he sees…with any controversy coming from different opinions rather than hatred of where he stands on this or that unrelated topic. Just as he did recently trying to save Disney as a whole as well as suggest what James Gunn can do (I’d like to tell James Gunn what he can do…) with his take on the DC Universe, his latest video from the Film Theorists focuses on what Marvel Studios should consider rather than calls to reboot the MCU or even bringing back old characters like he’s Russell T. Davies.

Since I do follow the deeper discussions and complaints from comic fans, however, there are a few thoughts I’d like to add to the conversation. I’m not a consultant like Matthew Patrick (that’s not snark; it’s actually something he’s done as a side gig to the four Theorist channels) but I have observed many of the MCU’s behind the scenes failings thanks to the people I follow and my goal of examining storytelling to become a better storyteller and promote better stories. Thus, I have some thoughts of my own.
