The White Black Panther Follies

I was planning to wait until more issues came out to make some comment on this, to see where it goes. Of course, with the culture war surviving longer that M*A*S*H*’s version of the Korean War, I’d probably rather not talk about this at all. Outside of the folly of not recasting T’Challa and some animated appearances I don’t know much about the Black Panther. Seeing how it’s been weaponized by people who don’t care about comics against comic fans on the opposite side of the battlefield I really don’t have a desire to. I’m not even sure I want to watch the movie anymore. Activists ruin everything, and if killing superheroes was their goal they’re doing better than any supervillain in any comic or TV show ever. So I had to use one of the sites I get the Ultraverse comics from to research this, and while I’m ignorant of the Wakandan area of the Marvel Universe I was able to follow what was happening even with the time jumps.

Now we have an alternate future story from Marvel Knights, their “adult” imprint (like you can tell the difference from a mainstream kid-ignoring comic these days) in the style of DC’s Black Label. It will be up to future writers to decide if this is indeed the future, though it means killing Storm off in a “race war” (whether it’s her being a “mutant” or “black” is hard to tell these days), T’Challa being killed by his own son, and said son looking like this.

Ketema (pronounced Kah-TO-ah somehow), the white son of T'Challa in the Marvel Knights Black Panther series The World To Come.

Admittedly not a bad cliffhanger.

Meet Ketema, pronounced “Ka-TO-mah” according to the comic. Not sure how that happens with the only “a” being at the end and no “o”s, but I guess that’s Wakanda for you. This is T’Challa’s son. Yes, he is as white as South African businessman Elon Musk. What was your first clue? There was a video many years ago that has since been taken down (though you can still read my thoughts if you want) where the host was using Black Panther as an example of race swapping long before the movie was even under consideration. Said host was talking about the problem of whitewashing T’Challa, somehow using Moon Knight Marc Spector as the end point. It made more sense in context (barely) but it’s not available anymore. Well, this isn’t a whitewash per say, but of course it’s bringing out the two sides of the culture war. I know which one I’m laughing along with, but once the fun is over the reason this is a bad idea starts becoming clearer. I know because I had it before the meltdown began.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Collective Of Heroes FCBD 2016

I see the superhero version of Guess Who is out.

Collective Of Heroes Free Comic Sampler 2016

(Free Comic Book Day, 2016)

In case you missed the last one, Collective Of Heroes was a website spotlighting indie webcomics. Many of the comics in the last issue went to full print or otherwise went down, so I won’t link to any of the comics. I have actually heard of at least one of these comics, so that’s cool.

At any rate we have 14 comics to go over. Time is short, but luckily so were the comics last time. Hopefully that continues here.

BW’s Daily Video> Kevin Feige’s Lack Of Accountability

I know I’ve been using a lot of JesterBell’s videos lately but she’s been putting out a lot of great takes in a row. Check out her YouTube channel. She doesn’t work here, so there are videos you’ll only see there. She also has a good point about Kennedy and Star Wars versus Feige and Marvel. Meanwhile, Bob Iger gets “yelled at” for his failings with Disney as a whole but nobody is being blamed for Pixar’s falling quality. There’s a lot that needs to be fixed over there and it starts by replacing people who don’t care about what they’re producing with ones that do, which means not only Feige but the other producers who push for ignorance of Marvel’s comic universe, the reason they have movies to make in the first place.

Five DC/Marvel Crossovers I’d Like To See Now That They’re Getting Along Again

Thanks to publishers not getting along, DC Comics and Marvel Comics stopped doing crossovers. I think JLA/Avengers was the last one but I could be wrong. That’s why I’m surprised to hear they were going to get their characters together again, starting with a Batman and Deadpool story. Marvel is owned by Disney now, and you have to wonder how they agreed to this given their history. They tried to downplay the X-Men and Fantastic Four in their comics because 20th Century Fox had the movie rights and they didn’t want to promote a rival company’s “more important” media. They even went as far as attempting to replace the X-Men with the Inhumans, a move they reversed not because the readers hated it but because the movie bombed so badly they wanted you to forget Inhumans ever existed.

And yet, here they are working with Warner Brothers Discovery, owners of DC and also only interested in the “more important” media they can make with the IPs. While they’ve been willing to work with other publishers, coming back together seemed very unlikely. Well, surprise! If this does well, and by whose standards is debatable given the state of comics period at the moment, it could lead to more crossovers. Maybe they can convince Kurt Busiek to do a sequel to the Justice League and Avengers teaming up.

So while I don’t care for THIS crossover due to not caring about Deadpool, I was thinking about what crossovers I would like to see from DC and Marvel if this is lucrative enough to put their movie studio rivalry aside to make more good comics. Check my list and see what you would add.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Sonic The Hedgehog #94

It looks like the retro comic break was timely. From issue #89-93 there is a gap in my collection. That must be the first time I got bored with the series, coming back when it started the new direction to see if it got any better.

I know this is an Archie comic, but did we need another teen school story?
