When the Phantom comes across a child slavery ring, the Phantom beats the snot out of them. Outside of one of the kids being a “fan” of the Ghost Who Walks, there’s not much else to say. It’s all action from there.

“Behind the Mask” takes a look at the Phantom’s history in comic books and prose.

What they got right: For the story being told, and the fact that it takes place at night, the art and coloring works. It’s all action, and almost all good. I like the kid who is so devoted to the Phantom that he takes it to the ringleader.

What they got wrong: I can understand Kit going into rage mode after he learns what the “cargo” is. However, unless he’s that upset about the patrolmen getting killed, would he really use a line like “Spill your guts, or I’ll spill your brains.”? Really? He just seems to be a bit too “hardcore” for our Kit Walker, even if he is just giving the impression to the bad guys that’s he’s going to waste them. The Phantom never seldom kills, and never in cold blood.

Recommendation: I wondering if this is a set-up for a new arc, but the Phantom seems a tad out of character, which is odd for the guy who’s been writing him almost since Moonstone got the license. Still good for a full collection, or a set-up for a new arc.

Go get him, kid!
