Like many people, I only watch the Super Bowl for the advertisements. Before I blamed it on wanting to know what people were talking about at work the next day, but now I have a blog that looks at the art of storytelling. Ads can tell a story, but it’s usually to sell products or promote certain opinions.

So I watched this year’s ads, which were actually kind of tame compared to last year. Should we blame CBS, who took over the Super Bowl this year? Not really, but I do blame them for having this year’s Halftime performers singing the theme songs to CBS shows. I don’t remember NBC doing that.

So for this year, I found 13 ads that I liked, which is too many to post on one blog entry. It would kill anyone with a real slow connection. So I lowered that as far as I could go and ended up with 6 videos. I’m putting them in order of how I tracked them down on YouTube, and giving them a fake award title. Because I can!

The “Dr. Love Evil Clone” Award

I’m not a huge KISS fan, but I am a Dr. Pepper drinker. I haven’t tried this Cherry Doctah. P (that’s what all the kids call it) (in my head), but you can’t do wrong with little versions of yourself. At first I thought they were kids, which was either brilliant or way too spooky, I’m not sure which.

The “Free Willy” Award

I cried at the end. Untrue story.

The “Golden Girls” Award

Because watching Betty White get tackled into a mud puddle is something we never knew we needed to see. Bonus for having Abe Vigoda. This is proof that our lives can never truly be complete, because there’s always something new we haven’t invented yet.

The “Reasons Skynet Hates Us” Award

Someday they’re going to leave John Connor alone long enough to take out this guy.

The “Samurai Ninja” Award

One of the Doritios “Crash the Super Bowl” contest winners, I’m afraid someone doesn’t know that ninjas kill by throwing snack chips, not samurais. Also, I’m not sure that armor has any effect on dumbbells. Someone call the Mythbusters.

The “Most Uncontroversial Controversy” Award

Remember that commercial by Focus on the Family that had all the “pro-choicers” up in arms because it was promoting a pro-life statement, and they were upset that CBS would allow a promotion ad like that during the Super Bowl? Yeah, turned out to be less controversial than a Go Daddy! ad. So certain liberal commentators who were determined to hate this ad just claimed it glorified abusing women. You know, the woman who got up and laughed off being tackled by a professional football player declaring that she’s tougher than he is? Sometimes I realize why I sit up in the Attic HQ and blog. Being around other humans gives me a headache.

I should also note that I can’t get this to come up in the Super Bowl Ad Blitz judging at YouTube, but I can get the Go Daddy ads. I call censorship. You can see all the other ads, and vote up or down on each of them.

There were others I liked, and some I didn’t. The E-Trade ads just aren’t that interesting, and if you can’t make a talking baby interesting, you’ve done something wrong. I also wrote down in my notes “Carmax’s lame use of the surprised animal meme should be played off by Keyboard Cat”. There were also plenty of other ads I could have put up here, if anyone wants a follow-up. But that’s the Super Bowl. Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints for their win, and for the record The Who did still rock the house stadium. Here’s to a better crop for next year.
