I thought that, were I to base the “Weekly Wrap-Up” title on the Jake & Leon strip, it might draw a few more readers than just a date. Then it seems more important or something. 🙂
Just in case you thought Jake and Leon didn’t deal with gamer woes as well. Like the blog itself, although comics tend to dominate the discussions we see our boys have, there are other things to discuss. And if you click the comic, you’ll get to see some of my commentary about girl gamers who are offended for what I see as no good reason. You’re not the target audience! Also, I need to get my work area organized.
Thanks to a surprise extra work day and internet issues both frustrating me and slowing down last night’s article being finished, I had a tough time getting a decent amount of news from around the net. However, I did get a few things of interest.
comics
- Somehow, I don’t think Boom Studios is going to get away with blaming THIS comic on a rouge artist. It’s more insulting than the Captain America panel that burned up conservatives last week.
- Comics Alliance‘s Caleb Goellner talked to Archie Comics CEO John Goldwater about a new project with Stan Lee as well as Josie and the Pussycats.
- I haven’t had the chance to read The Weekly Crisis as often as I’d like. So I almost missed this “Eric’s Soapbox” about trade promotion and the silliness of trying to bring movie aspects into comics.
- More shaking up at DC Entertainment’s comic division (aka DC Comics). But will it really help what’s broken?
television/movies
- I don’t care what Cartoon Network says. Expanding their “Adult Swim” block (which, if you ask me, isn’t programmed very well to begin with, what with the same show airing twice a night, too much reliance on a poor man’s Family Guy–and Family Guy, and ask anime fans about how poorly anime is treated) IS taking more time from kid and family-friendly shows.
- Sesame Workshop (formerly the Children’s Television Workshop, the guys behind Sesame Street), is working with Aniboom to start a contest to create more quality edutainment. (h/t: ToonZone.)
video games
- BanDai is bringing their popular SD Gundam online game to the west. Now you, too, can pilot a cute little Deathscythe.
- Despite a recent slup, video game sales are still pretty strong. Coming on $65 billion strong! EA’s John Schappert has some tips to keep that going. But does it include cracking down on the illegal downloads pirates?
- Uncharted 2 wins game of the year at this year’s D.I.C.E. convention. I haven’t played it, but it does look like an interesting story.
- Tiger Woods apologies, and EA’s happy. Not the case for all of his sponsors, though.
- Video games factor into CPAC’s (Conservative Political Action Committee) plans to reinvent themselves to prove to young people conservatism isn’t uncool. About time, guys! (h/t GamePolitics)
- Game developer Naughty Dog does a good deed for a local kennel.
- Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick on why he doesn’t play video games. He also gave a keynote address.
- I don’t understand the controversy over a bum-based video game. How is a game where you go from the street to Wall Street a bad idea?
- The OnLine video game service looks more and more like they may live up to their claim. But they’re still at the demo stage, and probably have more work ahead.
in other news
- Thanks to Bully for finding this cool gallery of a scale model of Uncle Scrooge’s famed money bin. That’s some amazing craftsmanship.
