I couldn’t let Saturday go without a showcase, since I already missed one recently during the site maintenance. But I’m on vacation. I don’t want to do any real work on this.
Luckily, Tyler James comes through for me again. A few weeks ago I reviewed his new nostalgia show, TJTV, which by the way has its own website. This week I received an e-mail from Tyler, thanking me for the review, but also letting me know that it actually isn’t his first web review show. He actually has another series (which he also has a site for, but I suggest using his YouTube page) called Plastic Addict. Unlike the Vangelus reviews, he only reviews bad toys for comedic purposes, sort of like a Linkara of bad Transformers figures.
Yes, Plastic Addict is all about the Transformers. Instant win. Plus, having subjected myself to even more bad Transformer review videos (as in the videos, not the toys), it was nice to once again see EDITING in a review. Tonight’s entry, though, combines parts of both shows as Tyler decides to review…himself…by looking at the first episode of Plastic Addict.
I also like seeing people’s work evolve, which is my biggest issue with the Star Wars Special Editions. (I couldn’t find a reason given for why the first video was taken down.) If you want to see what he can do now, though, here’s another review to take up some time, as he reviews a Transformer I can attest to as far as not being good, Armada Side Swipe.
(At least I got mine for $3-5 at a Wal-Mart clearance–the same situation that netted a sweet Omega Sentinel from Energon for less than half of the original shelf price! That more than makes up for it.)
So apparently the TJTV logo and theme song come from this show (which he started using at episode 13, a review of Titanium Soundwave to celebrate his 500th subscriber. Well, it’s not like he’s getting paid for these (you probably don’t get a lot from YouTube and Blip ad revenue), so I can understand not changing the theme, and I have the BW logo and another one I can use at any time, so he personalizes his work. No big, and I do dig the song. Of course, this video is still from the time he had the older camera, and used a headset instead of whatever mike he uses now in both shows and his other reviews, but it does show his progress and you can always go check out his latest videos.
He also has other reviews beyond this series, but I think I’m far enough out of the site’s mission statement. OK, one more review. He has another series where he does a 30 second review set to rhyme.
(I can confirm that this toy is awesome.) If you can’t enough of him (being straight, I can’t see it), he also occasionally does the WTF@TFW podcast along with Vangelus and some other guys who haven’t earned a Showcase or Internet Spotlight entry yet. So check out his YouTube page and see all his reviews to get an idea how you can make a toy review not boring, even without comedy and flashy effects. (Although those don’t hurt, and might get you a place in the Showcase.)
And if I can I will actually review an actual story-based video next week. Hopefully. It’s not like Tyler is going to make another show just to save my bacon, right? Right?
