As if I don’t have enough trouble getting these things out on time some days, power outage!
If you haven’t seen my ConnectiCon reports, you missed the fact that this year I planned to give out some business cards promoting the Spotlight. I didn’t give that many out. I suck at self-promotion.
Each of the cards had an original comic with cosplay, comic, and gaming themes, so I really can’t distribute them to non-conventions (and even then they have to be about comics and games and have a lot of cosplayers). However, I can show you those comics, which I scanned prior to the convention. This week is the first set, and next week will be the second set.
Who knew scanning a bunch of business cards would give me so much trouble? So while I didn’t do a whole lot of checking the news these past few weeks, there were a few articles that I did get a handle on, plus two weeks worth of Best Scene of the Week, since I completely forgot last week.
comics
- Web comic series The Crossoverlord announced a new spin-off, tentatively titled Crossoverkill. Participating heroes have not yet been announced. So don’t be surprised if Ringo pays Jake and Leon another visit.
- Four posts (fittingly) from Four Color Media Monitor got my attention in this period. The first is about a Chuck Dixon interview for an upcoming book entitled Comic Books Are Dead, a title that to me is a bit much. We just don’t have the right method yet, but I’m not giving up on comics or my preferred (the typical “floppie” style) format just yet.
- The second article has Avi wondering if Marvel isn’t sure what to do with Wolverine. Speaking of “overkill”, he has been used so much lately that I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s right, and if Deadpool isn’t far behind.
- The third is about J. Michael’s direction with Superman. With all the talk about Wonder Woman’s new jacket, we forgot that Superman was going the “Route 66” direction. Does anybody at the Daily Planet even bother to ASK Lois where her husband is anymore? Specifically, it’s about some geographic errors made in the story, but if it draws attention, and hopefully scorn, to the current story arc, all the better.
- The last one is how Amazing Spider-Man will no longer be a weekly comic but will return to monthly publishing. Considering there is once again more than one Spidey title (not counting Marvel Adventures), bit deal. Combine it with the talk a couple of weeks ago about Peter no longer being Spider-Man, and the whole post-BND world which is just about resetting the status quo and you wonder just how ADD-ridden they are over there?
television/movies
- I haven’t had the chance to watch it, but there’s a new season of Warehouse 13 (aka the only good thing on SyFy), and if it’s as awesome as last season, you should be watching. Just had to register that.
- I’m going to get more into it tomorrow, but the outfit is out for the new Green Lantern movie. It apparently has few fans both in and out of the comics community.
- I almost want to make this video a Saturday Night Showcase entry, but the Cinema Snob has found a copy of an old Superman musical that aired on TV. He wishes he didn’t.
- Another video: MarzGurl has a list of some new anime licenses, so the industry isn’t done yet.
- James Hudnall of Big Hollywood has begun a series of article about the wonderfulness that is Pixar.
video games
- I picked up a copy of Transformers: War For Cybertron thanks to some birthday money and a gift card. I haven’t played a whole lot of it just yet, but I can already tell you it’s an awesome game thus far. One hitch: between this and the demo for Batman: Arkham Asylum, I’m thinking the “PhysX” engine on the PC doesn’t like Logitech controllers, because it’s doing the same thing on this game that it did on the other demo. Push forwards and your character walks backwards and vice versa (although left and right still move in the proper direction). Somebody needs to serious look into that because I’d rather use the controller than the keyboard.
- Not too much here otherwise, just a couple of videos. The Angry Joe Show‘s “Lt. Lisa” snagged an interview at E3 with one of the creators of the upcoming video game Brink, and it sounds pretty interesting.
- In a recent Sessler’s Soapbox, G4 Editor-In-Chief and X-Play host Adam Sessler goes over just how they come up with game scores.
in other news
- Here is some fun with old commercials featuring DC superheroes (back when they were worthy of the title).
- The rest is all Transformer related. First off, are we getting closer to developing Cybertronian technology, or are we just going to make mech suits?
- Hasbro’s official press release about the non-character inductees into the official Transformers Hall of Fame. Again, my special congratulations to Peter Cullen and Bob Budiansky.
- Speaking of which, here’s an interview with Peter “Optimus Prime” Cullen.
- This Week’s Cracked: I’m not sure if I’ve posted this already, what with all the distractions, but 7 Celebrities That Launched by Accident will give you the scoop on Mel Gibson, Evangeline Lily, Marylin Monroe, Rosario Dawson, Pamela Anderson, John Wayne, and Johnny Depp. There’s something in there for everyone.
And now two weeks of Best Scene of This Week’s Reviews:
Last Week
The Phantom: Unmasked #1
It’s the Phantom as Crocodile Hunter. That’s how you beat a giant wind-up dinosaur. Barely.
This Week
The Muppet Show #7
No, I don’t know how this got past Batman and Tails fight scenes or half-dead Sunstreaker, but it did and that’s all that matters. Oh, Landry actually used my Best Scene scan from Batman: The Brave & The Bold this week. I feel honored.
