Drift started out as a Decepticon named Deadlock, at least when we meet him in this prequel. Violent as heck, Deadlock tries to betray his commander and ends up on the run. Landing on a planet, he meets up with a unfactioned Cybertronian named Wing (no relation) who gets him to agree to help him in a rescue mission. Deadlock, taking the name Drift, ends up getting his exhaust port handed to him and finds himself with Wing and his friends, rebuilt and in the “new” Crystal City.

What they got right: There is some above average artwork, including the colors. For a modern comic, and one featuring the Decepticons, they’re surprisingly not very dark.

What they got wrong: There are a few points that feel sped up for a four-part modern comic, and yet outside of a couple short battles nothing really happens. But mostly this is just going to be McCarthy trying to prove to us that his original character is going to be cool. Fans weren’t won over for the Spotlight: Drift comic and I wish he had put this kind of effort into fleshing out a Transformers character that never had a media portrayal. A lot of toys are known only by their profile and have fans of their own.

Recommendation: I really can’t give you one here. It’s not bad, but as I said, nothing really happens and what little does is over in only a few panels. Maybe when more issues come out I can judge it as a whole.

That must have taken a long time to draw with that much detail. I approve.
