This anthology features three stories focusing on S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Marvel Movieverse, originally posted at Marvel’s “Digital Comics” area. Joe Casey isn’t credited on the front page, but he is throughout the comic since he wrote all three stories. Only the artists changed. The first two stories make mention of the “10 Rings”, the background terrorist group from the first Iron Man movie.
The first story, “Who Made Who”, has a Navy S.E.A.L. team about to break up a 10 Rings operation in Yemen, when Iron Man shows up and takes down the entire group before the S.E.A.L.s can even do anything. We learn that a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is embedded in the Navy elite to keep an eye on Tony’s actions as Iron Man. The art has way too much crosshatching and the colors dark except for the armor, but it’s not horrible. It’s a decent starter story.
I’m not a fan of the art in “Just off the Farm”, though. It’s not hard to tell what’s going on but something about it doesn’t agree with me. The story is decent enough, as Coulson puts a new agent through his paces in a story that’s set just after the press conference of the first movie but just before Nick pays Tony a visit in the epilogue. Not a bad story, but definitely the weakest of the three.
This is followed by the best of the three, “Proximity”, the Black Widow focus story showing how she got to where we meet her in the second movie. The art is easily the best of the lot, and it’s a fun story to boot, watching Black Widow deal with her new assignment, work her way through Stark Industries and get close to Tony Stark (without ending up in his bed). Like I said, the best of the three.
Overall, if you like the Movieverse, this is a good comic to get your hands on.
