Sonic The Hedgehog #219
Archie Comics (January 2011)
WRITER: Ian Flynn PENCILER: Jamal Peppers INKER: Terry Austin COLORIST: Matt Herms LETTERER: John Workman EDITOR: Paul Kaminski EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Victor Gorelick
In the main story, Geoffrey St. John recruits Sonic to go into Faust’s Special Zone to retrieve a Chaos Emerald. St. John claims to just be getting it to humor ex-king Max, who has lost his mind and is determined to retake the throne. In fact, St. John is working to just that end and is going so far as approaching Mammoth Mogul and Ixis Naugus to do it. Meanwhile, Mina is having concerns about living in a nanite-spawned city after the Iron Dominion invasion.
The backup is an introduction to the Sonic Colors video game, coming for the Wii and DS.
What they got right: I’ve been out of the loop for some time, so I know little about Mina’s or Ash’s personalities to know if they’re in character. I know there’s something about Ash I don’t like. The art is at their usual standards.
What they got wrong: You know, I think the Mobians were better off when Max was gone. He’s a real jerk, looking to restore the old ways at all costs. He’s as bad as Robotnix/Eggman but without the resources. I hate the character, and I’ve never liked Geoffrey St. John. This is more personal taste than anything else, but it does mean I’m going to hate this arc.
Recommendation: I suppose it’s OK, but featuring two characters I hate makes it tough for me to actually judge this comic fairly.
Tomorrow’s Comic: Marvel Adv. Spider-Man V2 #8, which will hopefully be on time. Hopefully you’ll soon see what is eating up my time this week.
