The holidays are over, which means the fighting is back on. In case you’ve forgotten the theme is “Fight Life”, basically another free-for-all. For this I’m grabbing a comic at random and, if it has any kind of fight, posting it. And today we get one of the lucky ones.

I’ve mentioned in previous articles that Wildstorm did a rather poor job with Thundercats. Well, back when the show was airing and popular, Marvel obtained the license. Marvel doing a licensed story doesn’t usually end well (not counting Transformers and surprisingly Godzilla) unless it’s sent to an imprint. In another sign of luck, this is what Marvel did, sending the series to their kid-targeted “Star Comics” imprint. Issue #2 may not seem the best to you, but it’s still better than what Wildstorm gave us.

Fight Life Round 4

The Battlefield: Thundercats #2 (Star Comics, February 1986) “Tears of Sunrise”

The Promoters: David Michelinie (writer), Jim Mooney (penciler), Brett Breeding (inker), Janice Chiang (letterer), Petra Scotese (colorist), and Mike Carlin (editor)

The title refers to poisonous berries that Lion-O eats behind Snarf’s back (because this was when Lion-O’s emotional maturity didn’t match his physical one thanks the faulty suspension capsule). Now that he’s on the sick list, it’s up to the other Thundercats to rescue Snarf (who went looking for Lion-O’s old teddy bear doofle to cheer him up) from the mutants.

Oddly, these henchmen didn't fight much on the show.

Their thugs are of course no match for the Thundercats, except they have the edge of sheer numbers. They could use Lion-O, but he’s fighting for his life. If his fever doesn’t break by sunrise, he’ll die.

"Are you sure you're no fever dream?"

With Jaga’s encouragement, Lion-O decides it’s time to be the hero.

I don't remember it being able to do that in the show.

And so the Thundercats get that last bit of help they need to win. No, not the guy with the second famous magical sword (He-Man’s Power Sword I believe is the one people think of). I mean…

Now in stores, kids. Bug your parents for one.

THE THUNDERTANK!

Smart enough not to challenge 18 tons (approximate) of death, the mutants beat a hasty retreat in time for the obligatory mushy moment.

Thunder thunder thunder Thundercatsssssssss
