The trailer is now out for the upcoming reboot of Thundercats. Naturally I have to comment on it. So here we go.

The first thing to notice is visually this is beautiful. This shouldn’t be that big a surprise since the producers are the guys behind the recent Wonder Woman animated movie and Avatar: The Last Airbender, with Sam Register as Executive Producer. (source). We also finally get to see the Thunderkittens and they do look good. The only thing missing from the Thundercats’ uniforms is the cat symbol, which can be seen in the royal chamber. The next thing you notice that there are going to be a number of differences. Lion-O may not be an adult, but he’s not a young boy, either. He appears to be at least in his late teens. Also, they appear to have decided to place the series on an unexploded Thundera. The article I just linked to in this paragraph seems to confirm this.

“…A sweeping tale combining swords/science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of ‘Prince Lion-O’ and his ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled ‘Stones of Power’, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode…”

So it appears that the series theme is still there (in the old series the Thundercats were all about “truth, honor, loyalty, and friendship”) but the story of refugees surviving on a strange new planet (Third Earth) is gone. It’s just another fantasy story. Granted, it could end up being a darn good fantasy story and I will give it a fair chance. I will miss the residents of Third Earth (Berbils and Warrior Maidens mostly, although we appear to still be getting Mumm-Ra and Grune appears to have a larger role) and Snarf being just a pet, which continues to tick me off (read my report for why), but it could still turn out to be a good show. When it debuts, you can expect a review. I’m having trouble finding out when that is. How do I get these press releases?
