Sonic the Hedgehog #226

Archie Comics (August, 2011)

WRITER: Ian Flynn
PENCIL BREAKDOWNS/COVER ART: Patrick Spaziante
PENCIL FINISHES: Tracy Yardley
INKER: Terry Austin
COLORIST: Matt Herms
LETTERER: John Workman
EDITOR: Paul Kaminski

A speedy blue hedgehog named Sonic zips around finding lost animals when he comes across Sally, Boomer, and Antoine, three “freedom fighters” looking to stop the evil Dr. Eggman and his nephew, Snively. Wait, why does this story sound familiar?

What they got right: Since they’re going for the classic look here, the story taking place at the beginning of the game franchise, having the artist from that time doing at least the breakdowns of the pencil stage is a good idea, while having Yardley update the look just enough to feel like a current Sonic comic.

What they got…well, wait a minute. Yeah, the whole DC reboot/relaunch whatever thing has me annoyed, but I just remembered that there’s an upcoming Sonic game which involves past and current Sonic. While the continuity isn’t in line with the Archie Sonicverse, as long as this reverses in the next arc or so (the characters do realize something is amiss), this could work.

Recommendation: I’m not sure if I’d call this a jumping-on point, since I don’t know how this arc is going to end, but it’s a good, fun story and I enjoyed it. At least worth looking at if not outright buying.

That's not the Snively we all know and loathe.
