Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

Trying something different. Yesterday a friend and I went to see Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Usually I would review it as an article, and I even started an article series towards that end. However, since circumstances have prevented me from seeing a lot of movies in the theaters this year it’s not much of a series. I decided to throw together a V-Log so I could discuss it fresh, giving you my (relatively) immediate thoughts on it.  After the video, which will include spoilers (but I’ll tell you when they start) I’ll post a few thoughts (with more spoilers) now that I’ve had more time to gather them.

  • The first thing I forgot to mention that struck me as odd is the fact that the Dreamworks logo and name doesn’t show up once in the credits. Only Paramount Pictures and Hasbro get credits for putting this film together.
  • I also forgot to mention is the foreshadowing of Sentinel going crazy. The Star Trek episode they used was “Amok Time”, in which Spock goes mad and tries to kill Captain Kirk. However, this was because of Pon-Farr (the Vulcan mating season), which means that if this was intentional foreshadowing, then it was a stretch.
  • Rosie Alice Huntington-Whiteley was Megan Fox’s replacement, Carly Spencer. Like I said, she wasn’t bad, but she won’t be winning any performances. The fact that it was her first role was obvious. If you hated Megan Fox or Mikela, Carly/Rosie Alice won’t be as annoying.
  • Something I really wish I had thought to add about Sentinel’s motivations: He had intended on turning the Earthlings into slaves (although again, heck of a missed rendezvous, considering when Megatron landed and when Sentinel Prime landed). But this is more like the Fallen than the other Primes. The Primes sacrificed themselves to keep the Fallen from destroying the Earth and its inhabitants, and they weren’t even up to the levels of when Megatron crashed culturally. That makes Sentinel even more evil.
  • NEST’s liason this time around is a new character, Charlotte Mearing. She was less of an annoyance. She still had her issues with the Autobots, like the dunce in the second movie, but although cold and opinionated she was less of a jackass about it. I kind of liked her, at least as a character. If I knew her in person? Wouldn’t have liked her very much.
  • I forgot the character Eddie, a new NEST member. He’s not very memorable, but still I should write an outline or list of discussion topics or something next time.
  • Carly’s boss: Patrick Dempsey.  Like I said, good character, and he gets what he deserves in the end. Never once thinks of not betraying the human race to the Decepticons. I think that worked.
  • Sam’s boss was nuts. Actually fun to watch, but he lost me about the time he tries to box with Bumblebee in Sam and Carly’s apartment.
  • Also not as many dirty jokes, and no dominating dogs but at least one “I’m not gay” joke. Sam’s mom does make a reference about her son’s “manbits” but it wasn’t as bad as “Sam’s Happy Time” from the first movie or the brownie scene from the second one. Still hate her, though.
  • I have to admit there were a couple of scenes that actually had me leaning forward and caring about the Autobots’ fate, which is more than I can say for the first two movies. Still, I only cared about any Autobots besides Bumblebee and Optimus because I’m a Transformers fan.

So my first V-log review, and it wasn’t a bad movie. It was OK for what it was, a popcorn action flick. Next time I write a list of topic first so I don’t miss as many things and spend less time reaching for something to talk about.
