Transformers #24

IDW Publishing (August, 2011)

STORY: Mike Costa & James Roberts
WRITER: Mike Costa
ARTIST: Livio Ramondelli
(this includes all three covers, “B” cover shown)
LETTERER: Chris Mowry
EDITOR: Carlos Guzman

Omega Supreme arrives at Cybertron, and Optimus confronts Galvatron again. When Optimus again refuses to follow Galvatron (who won’t explain the threat of D-Void, but just wants the Autobots to follow him blindly) a battle ensues. The Autobots drive off Galvatron’s army, but they’ve taken over an Autobot ship, that transforms into a giant cannon.

What they got right: As a story, it’s actually pretty interesting. While I’ve had my issues with Costa’s Transformers work in the past, teaming him with James Roberts may have helped a little. The art is also beautiful…for the style, which leads right into…

What they got wrong: The static shots are beautiful. The action scenes, however, are hard to follow. For example, in one panel Ironhide asks Drift if he’s OK. If he hadn’t I wouldn’t have even realized Drift had been shot (or whatever happened to him). There are also more appearances by Transformers who had toys that are just here to die. Poor use of characters, guys.

Recommendation: While there is some improvement in the story, the art being hard to follow and the misuse of characters who had fans make this hard to recommend.

See, the static artwork is cool. There are a couple of shots in Galvatron's cell that are nice, too.
