Forget the old origin. The Turtles get a brand new one, although all we know for now is that April O’ Neil and Baxter Stockman have a closer connection to their origin. There is also a mysterious general named Krang, and another mutation named Old Hob, plus Raphael (who for some reason is separate from the others) meets Casey Jones as he’s being beat up by his dad.
What they got right: Since this is a new origin, the writers decided to split between present day (to get the action going) and the flashback. This way we don’t get bored with what’s going to be a long story.
What they got wrong: I wasn’t a fan of the comics (and probably won’t go past the first arc on this one), but I did enjoy both cartoons and the movies (except for #3, of course, but I didn’t hate it as bad as some others). So the fact that April now gets to name the Turtles when it’s been Splinter in every version previous didn’t sit right with me. Also {counting} 12 covers? Why?
Recommendation: If you were really tied to Mirage’s continuity, your not going to be happy with this, but otherwise I think it’s off to a decent start and I’m honestly curious to see the rest of the origin story. You should at least give it a look.
No Best Scene nomination here, because I would nominate the entire fight from the beginning and that’s too many pages for Best Scene.
