The library really takes overdue books seriously. (Yes, I reused a joke.)

Richie Rich: Rich Rescue #4

Ape Entertainment/Kidzoic (2011)

COVER ART: Jack Laurence
CONCEPT: Brent E. Erwin
LETTERER: Deron Bennett (except for story 3)

First some good news: this is now an ongoing series. The latest Previews lists #5 coming out soon (with a variant cover, *sigh*). This is good news, as this has been a great series thus far. Again, four stories this issue, plus the return of “classic style” Richie Rich.

Jason M. Burns & Nate Sharir team up for the title story, “Yen For A Yeti”, with Marcelo Ferreira on art and Dustin Evans on colors. The team is sent by Ritchie’s mom to search for an artifact, but instead run into a yeti, his ninja-style monk guardians, and poachers. A good story that hopefully will take this title from treasure hunting back the “Rich Rescue” of the title. (Although I could get behind Richie Rich: Treasure Hunters, personally.)

Kevin Freeman takes to writing for “Give A Dog A Bone”, featuring Dollar and another dog named Buck. (Might be another classic Richie Rich character I don’t know.) It’s a short skit as Dollar uses some Keenbean tech to help Buck find a bone. James Silvani has the best art of the comic with Tim Durning complimenting on colors.

Ernie Colon takes over art, coloring and lettering (Deron Bennett doing the lettering otherwise) for another story done in the style of the classic comics. “Unhappy…uh HAPPY Birthday”, by Sid Jacobson, shows Richie trying to put together a birthday party for his mom…and things don’t go well. Nice surprise at the end, but not the strongest story this issue.

Finally Patrick Rills comes in for this week’s “Gadget Corner” and pity poor Irona on this one. Silvani and Durning return on art and I think Jack Lawrence (who does the cover) does the best art for the comic, this team is a close second.

I’m hoping that the ongoing will be full-length stories, with maybe a back-up in the classic style or alternating with a character focus story. Either way, I’ll keep reading because it’s a great comic and I’m glad it has become a regular series rather than staying a miniseries.

I know I don’t usually do a “Best Scene” nomination, but as a Shortpacked reader, I had to make this joke:

Never assume a boy doesn't have ninjas at his disposal.
