Ducktales #5

“Dangerous Currency” part 1 (crossover with Darkwing Duck)

Boom Entertainment/Kaboom! (September, 2011)

Yes, Diamond finally got around to getting my local comic store the issues they ordered.

STORY: Warren Spector, Ian Brill, and James Silvani
WRITERS: Warren Spector & James Silvani
ARTISTS: James Silvani (also covers) & José Massaroli
COLORIST: Braden Lamb
LETTERER: Deron Bennett
EDITOR: Christopher Burns

Scrooge and the boys (along with Webby) hit St. Canard because Scrooge wants to question actions by Launchpad as head of Quackwerks over in Darkwing Duck. What they find is Fenton Crackshell (the alter ego of Gizmoduck), who disappeared a year ago, just as he is kidnapped by the same ink/slime that was behind Suff-Rage’s recent attacks on Darkwing. Drake is forced to reveal his secret identity as Darkwing Duck to Scrooge, and together with Gyro and Honker attempt to bring back Gizmoduck but an enhanced Megavolt and Beagle Boys steal the armor for Magica De Spell and the Phantom Blot’s new supervillain team.

What they got right: With Launchpad in both shows, I’m surprised it took this long to get a crossover, whether it was a comic or episode. We finally learn (partly) what happened to Fenton and if they’re going to cancel this series, they’re planning to go out with a bang.

What they got wrong: Drake didn’t seem to know who Fenton was, or maybe I misunderstood one of his lines. However, when did Launchpad find out Fenton was Gizmoduck? Also, why is Disney pulling the license on Kaboom? Ducktales just spun off of Uncle Scrooge and if they’re doing as good a job here as they have been on Darkwing Duck, this seems like a mistake.

Recommendation: I enjoyed the show, but I wasn’t drawn to the comic. The “Dangerous Currency” crossover seems off to a good start, and I’m looking forward to part two in Darkwing Duck #17.

I think Megavolt's been boosting.
