As usual the TARDIS crew attempt to go on vacation only to have it go horribly wrong. In this case it’s getting involved by a group of bodyguards who didn’t succeed and are willing to like to save their own skin and stop a war. Not that the two sides involved are exactly the good guys. However, they may not be as guilty as they thought, but should the Doctor tell them?
What they got right: I rag on Simon Furman a lot, and when it comes to his Transformers stories he usually deserves it. However, his Doctor Who stories have been pretty good, maybe because his style better fits this series than it does Transformers or some of the US superhero stories I’ve seen and heard about from him. From idea to execution, there’s really only one complaint:
What they got wrong: Let me see if I follow this: Someone is struck with a disease thanks to a suicide attack (which we have to assume is chemical-related) and the only cure is the atmosphere of a planet but the end result is the combination of the disease and the atmosphere mutates her? What?
Recommendation: See, there is a Simon Furman story I can recommend. Here’s one.
Reprints don’t get Best Scene nominations.
