Mega Man #17
Archie Comics (November, 2012)
“Proto-type” part 1: “Father And Son” WRITER: Ian Flynn PENCILER: Chad Thomas INKER: Gary Martin COLORIST: Matt Herms LETTERER: John Workman ASSISTANT EDITOR: Vincent Lovallo EDITOR: Paul KaminskiRock finds a reference to an earlier robot, Blues. Dr. Light tells the story about his first thinking robot and how he accidentally lost him.
What they got right: I don’t think we’ve ever had a version of Protoman where we really understood why he left Dr. Light. And I also give points to Flynn for not going the usual “badass” route with Proto’s backstory. “I left to fight evil. That’s it.” Not here.
What they got wrong: I won’t say “wrong” exactly, but the tone here isn’t as action-packed as we’ve been used to seeing in this title so I hope you can handle that. Personally, although it led to a lack of Best Scene (the emotional moment was good but not Best Scene good), I can’t say anything bad about it.
Recommendation: It’s an origin of Protoman that isn’t all “I left to be awesome” and that works for me. I say give it a look.
