Doctor Who Vol. 3 #1
IDW Publishing (September, 2012)
“Hypothetical Gentlemen” part 1 WRITER: Andy Diggle ARTIST: Mark Buckingham COLORIST: Charlie Kirchoff LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Denton J. TiptonLondon, 1851: After the events of Diggle’s story in the special I reviewed last week, The crew finds out what happened to Crystal Palace, and also find a machine created by a young couple when the woman receives a vision. This machine has unleashed a new threat…and the Doctor may have unwittingly provided the power source.
What they got right: Based on the fact that the machine opens “a window into hypothetical worlds and catch a glimpse of what might have been”, plus Amy and Rory talking about what might have been with Melody/River, the foreshadowing is a bit obvious for our subplot, but I’ve seen worse, plus it makes for a good subplot idea.
What they got wrong: Why does IDW feel the need to relaunch after every long-term plotline? This is supposed to be an ongoing title. So go on already and stop being a miniseries of multi-part tales!
Recommendation: No stand-out moments but a good start. How Diggle continues will determine how much I enjoy his run.

I’ve been wanting to read IDW’s Doctor Who comics for a while but can never find them. It does seem kind of odd that they would restart after every multi-issue arc; I don’t think Marvel’s Doctor Who series from the 1970s and 1980s did that.
