MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlet #1

Super Dinosaur. Danger Club. G-Man. Now this. I think I’m ruining MY image by buying all these Image Comics titles. 🙂

MacGyver is asked by one of his old professors to help protect a new “super seed” which could help fight world hunger. However, one of his benefactors want to engineer it to be a temporary solution to rake in the bucks and they’re not concerned with how they get it. If that wasn’t enough, there’s a stuck-up Interpol agent to deal with…and bounty on his head that drops every day.

What they got right: I wasn’t a die-hard fan of the show but I do enjoy it when I come across an episode and my parents are big fans. So I know the show pretty well and this very much feels like the show. All the old bit are there as MacGyver breaks out his science knowledge. Sure, fans of Mythbusters know that the theories are sound but the execution is often exaggerated, but that shouldn’t kill the fun. (No, that’s not at odds with last night’s article link.) Not surprising since one of the co-writers proved he can do a good adaptation on IDW’s Doctor Who and the other is the TV show’s creator!

What they got wrong: Going for the evil, greedy corporation right out of the gate, are we guys? It’s not like you still couldn’t make a fortune off the seeds as is. Seems a lot of work to re-engineer it as the prof claims, and aren’t all seeds “one-shot bullets”? You plant the seed, it grows and unless you count the new seeds that come from whatever you’re growing the seed’s pretty much used. There’s always room for improvement and does the professor really expect the company wouldn’t want a return on their investment? And on a nitpickier note, isn’t MacGyver usually clean-shaven? He has a five-o’clock shadow here and in the preview for the next issue.

Recommendation: This promises to be a good thrill ride and I’m hoping it delivers. Show fans have probably already picked up their copy, but for the rest of you it’s at least worth a look.
