Transformers: Regeneration One #86
IDW Publishing (December, 2012)
“Natural Selection” part 1 WRITER: Simon Furman PENCILER: Andrew Wildman INKER: Stephen Baskerville COLORIST: John-Paul Bove LETTERER: Chris Mowry EDITOR: John Barber
On Nebulos, Scorponok uses torture to convince Grimlock to join his cause, to reprogram all Autobots into Decepticons. His biggest tool is Grimlock’s guilt over what Nucleon did to the other Dinobots. On Earth, the humans decide to kick the Autobots off, but Starscream has escaped his tomb to make contact with Galvatron. On Cybertron, Rodimus must decide whether or not to destroy Thunderwing’s tomb to stop the theft of his remains.
See, there’s your problem. Three different threats against Cybertron plus another universe where Transformers are banned from Earth. Why does IDW hate stories with the Transformers on Earth? Is that why they won’t give Budiansky a REAL Transformers story to work on instead of re-adapting the movie?
Back to storyline overflow. Individually these might be interesting stories. Grimlock having his guilt used against him by Scorponok would be interesting if I didn’t hate Furman’s version of Grimlock so much. The story with Thunderwing’s remains might have potential. And Galvataron, Furman’s OTHER “pet character” will make an interesting foil. Together, however, it matches up about as well as typical soap opera. Furman needs to pick one storyline and finish it or none of them will hold interest.
That’s what makes it difficult to recommend this issue. There are some good ideas poorly mashed together, which is typical for Furman. That and making Optimus Prime look bad (which also happens in this issue). Just keep Arcee out of this continuity. I’d hate to think he’d have a worse origin this time but I’m sure he could come up with one.
