New Crusaders #5
Archie Comics/Red Circle (February, 2013)
“Trial By Fire” part 1 “Jailbreak” WRITER: Ian Flynn PENCILER: Althia Martinez INKER: Gary Martin COLORIST: Matt Herms LETTERER: John Workman ASSISTANT EDITOR: Vincent Lovallo EDITOR: Paul Kaminski “Legacy of the Crusaders”: “The Black Hood” WRITER/ARTIST: Bray Morrow FLAT COLOR: Barry Grossman RENDERING: Thomas Mason EDITOR: Robin SnyderThe new Crusaders face their first mission when the Brain Emperor breaks some of the original’s old foes out of prison. Our heroes may end up overwhelmed by sheer numbers (and Fly-Girl overwhelmed by a confession from Fireball) In the back-up story we have the origin of the new Black Hood, when a detective decides the system is too flawed and learns about his family’s heritage.
What they got right: It’s their first mission and they haven’t exactly been training for years. So you expect things to not go well. In the “Legacy” story Kip reminds me of Lee Majors during his Steve Austin days, which is just an observation really.
What they got wrong: Another observation: these villains are rather bloodthirsty, aren’t they? This is an all-ages comic, not a kids comic (yes there’s a difference) so it doesn’t bother me too much but…geez. Also, Fireball’s admission kind of comes out of nowhere and this potential change in their relationship comes without a lot of warning but we’ll see where that goes.
Recommendation: Sadly, this is going to be a set of mini-series rather than an ongoing, but it’s a great comic that’s worth supporting.
No one moment really stood out for me as Best Scene. Maybe they should have put this out last week. 😀
