It seems like every adaptation/update of Wells' story is afraid to update the alien machines save George Pal's.

It seems like every adaptation/update of Wells’ story is afraid to update the alien machines save George Pal’s.

Or nineteenth century. Whichever. 😛

Fun story: As a teen I did a bunch of comics in my notebook called “War of the Fools” where I had a trio of aliens try to prove themselves to humans by disintegrating annoying people. In hindsight it wasn’t very funny but I love drawing George Pal’s ships. I don’t even understand why so many adaptations have gone the tripod route. If Star Wars has taught us anything is that giant walking machines are easy to trip up. You just need a cable or a lot of logs. But ships that hover over the ground, with a giant death ray eye and energy torpedoes and an electromagnetic shield? Badass!

I also found out that George Pal was planning his own War of the Worlds TV series long before the 90’s series. There’s an unaccepted pilot online I really need to check out sometime.

  • The Clutter Reports: All the conventions I cover leads to a lot of a particular kind of clutter. This week we deal with that.
  • Reviewers Unknown: The last part of Richard Hatch’s love letter to Apollo. It’s going to get a lot worse in the future, as BW readers already know.

It’s a dinosaur wearing a jet. How is that NOT awesome! You can’t answer, can you? You’re too shocked by the awesomeness. That’s fine. How can you not be in awe?
