The crew takes shore leave on the planet Hedonia where one group goes to a bar. In a later prose story, Rung confronts Rodimus and Ultra Magnus concerning a recording Red Alert made before he was attacked.
What they got right: I usually complain about the over-the-top characterizations and how they don’t really benefit the character. For the most part I stand by that, but in this story I thought it served the story well. We learn a bit more about the characters featured, there’s advancement in the solid hologram avatars (it’s cute that Ultra Magnus specifically chose to base his on Verity while the others are based on their personalities–the latter being how I thought it always worked) and some legitimately amusing moments. I also caught some of the cameos around the bar, both from Transformers history in general and a few sci-fi references outside of Transformers.
What they got wrong: The prose story flashes back to the team from the drawn story hanging out in a gift shop for no reason. What we did get of Rung’s conversation with Rodimus and Ultra Magnus could just as easily been done as a small epilogue in comic form. Also, Transformers can’t have genders but they can get drunk off their backsides? I don’t understand the logic of how Transformers function in this series.
Recommendation: This is still a hard series for me to recommend, but if you’ve already been following…well, you probably already have this issue, but if you don’t it’s worth a look.
