When their regular vacation goes horribly wrong, the Doctor arrives to take Amy & Rory onto a star-liner…with actual tickets. However there is another guest–Christina. She seems to have her eye on the diamond taken from the core of a now-collapsing star. Then there’s the forthcoming mutiny. This is going to be a worse vacation, isn’t it?
What they got right: Despite everything I’ll bring up in “got wrong”, this did entertain me. I liked watching Amy & Rory carry on. On Earth (when she walks past our Earthling heroes) Christina mentions going to Utah, a reference to the filled in museum to alien stuff that have crossed the Doctor’s path back in Dalek. There are some interesting questions: is Christina trying to save the star or is she looking to fulfill her usual ambitions? How will the mutiny turn out and is the Captain Kirk wanna-be typical of the Vodirans?
What they got wrong: The Doctor is an afterthought in this story. That would be OK if this was the Ponds Williams’ story, but it belongs to Christina. Leading my next problem: WHY IS THIS CHARACTER BACK! I hated her when the episode came out and I don’t like her any more now. Go watch Diamanda Hagan’s review of Planet of the Dead. Pretty much agree with her.
Recommendation: I hope the second part features more Doctor and friends and less Christina. It’s still a decent first part so worth a look.
