Young Justice #25
FINAL ISSUE
DC Comics (April, 2013)
“Players” part 6: “Rolling Doubles” WRITER: Greg Weisman ARTIST: Christopher Jones COLORIST: Zac Atkinson LETTERER: Wes Abbott EDITOR: Sarah Gaydos
Year Zero: Dick’s birthday includes a game of spin the bottle. Year One: The League and the Team are wrong about Queen Bee’s target. Year Five: Queen Bee makes another move while the two hero groups convince Kylstar and Brainiac to stop being evil.
What they got right: The conclusion to the “Invasion” storyline in the comic leads into the TV series’ story arc and reaches a satisfying conclusion while leaving secrets for the show to deal with. Kylstar taking the supervillains (willingly) explains why they aren’t around in the show.
What they got wrong: Convincing Brainiac to discontinue what he usually does felt like something you’d see in Super Friends, except Brainiac in that series stayed himself throughout. Otherwise, the problem is killing this comic simply because the series is ending. As I’ve said before, the TV shows and movies should lead people to the source material. Super Friends and The Adventures of Superman led me to the comics and why I’m a DC fan–at least until the past few years when they decided to become Marvel in tone.
Recommendation: I’d push this series as how I wish the DCU proper was running; fun superhero stories that still find a way to create likeable, relatable characters. Maybe a push for comics like this will register with someone at DC, since I doubt Warner Brothers is paying attention.
