Rocketeer Hollywood Horror #2

And that’s how Hollywoodland became Woodland.

The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror #2

IDW Publishing (March, 2013)

WRITER: Roger Langridge
ARTIST: J Bone
COLORIST: Jordie Bellaire
LETTERER: Tom B. Long
EDITOR: Scott Dunbier
“ROCKETEER” CREATOR: Dave Stevens

Dahlia ends up at a cabin with an old couple. Back in LA Cliff continues to hide from the goons while learning that Betty is involved with Rune’s cult trying to find her roommate. This leads to the Rocketeer having to foil Rune’s “prediction” while Betty finds the detectives (and their dog). Sadly the goons also find Cliff.

What they got right: The action, the mystery…it all leads to an interesting and fun story. While I still think Bone’s style clashes with Stevens’ he does a good job on the visuals and you get caught up in the story just the same.

What they got wrong: This subplot with the henchmen taking back the rocket is just so unnecessary. By the way, while the pack was created by Howard Hughes in the movie, I learned that in the comic it was implied that Doc Savage actually created the pack, which makes sending goons to forcibly take the rocket even more confusing. Then again I’ve never read the Doc Savage book and only saw a few minutes of the movie before boredom set in so maybe he is that big a jerk.

Recommendation: I’m still digging the story and it’s one worth checking out.
