Doctor Who: Prisoners Of Time #3
IDW Publishing (March, 2013)
WRITERS: Scott & David Tipton ARTIST: Mike Collins SELECTED COVER ART: Francesco Francavilla COLORIST: Charlie Kirchoff LETTERER: Tom B. Long EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton
The Third Doctor and Sarah Jane are called back to UNIT by Liz Shaw. Liz was asked to assist in investigating a series of strange rain but finds the Brigadier has gone off the deep end. the Doctor is not only able to help his friend and uncover the true threat but he’s also the first of his lives to catch site of the man kidnapping his companions past and present.
What they got right: The Tiptons seemed to want to use both Sarah Jane Smith and Liz Shaw and found a way to do it. (No love for Jo Grant, apparently.) While I heard at least one of my counterparts complain that it didn’t quite feel like a Third Doctor tale, it still fits more than the First Doctor from this series. The art isn’t spectacular but it works well enough.
What they got wrong: The Remorxian biology doesn’t make sense to me. The Remortian Prime is this blog thing but the others are more like the slug things from Star Trek 2, except these parasites control from the throat. How are they the same species? The addition of the CIA (the US version, not the Galifreyan version) and President Nixon threatening to bomb Great Britain seems an unnecessary move.
Recommendation: A decent Third Doctor story and more about the mysterious enemy threatening all Doctors. It’s at least worth a look.
