I don’t know why this didn’t post this morning, so here’s a bonus night post.
It Girl & The Atomics #10
Image Comics (May, 2013)
“Tweenage FBI” Part 1 WRITER: Jamie S. Rich ARTIST: Natalie Norigat COLORIST: Allen Passalaqqua LETTERS/DESIGN: Crank COVER ART: Michael & Laura Allred EDITORS: Jamie S. Rich & Eric Stephenson CHARACTERS CREATOR: Michael Allred
Osamu’s invention is stolen from Flem’s lab, and It Girl tracks it to a pre-teen branch of Tri-Eye, who have it stolen from them by an agent we’ve already met and isn’t what he appears…and neither is his real boss!
What they got right: Sure it makes Tri-Eye look incompetent, but I don’t have a problem with the Kimmandoes (although I don’t understand the name)…yet. They are some kid superspies, but are regular kids recruited by the spy organization. There’s more backstory about Osamu’s device when I thought that was going to be the end of it.
What they got wrong: OK, I’m more neutral on this one but it leans towards “wrong”. We (and It Girl) are told that the Mayan calendar actually depicted that magic would end in 2012 which leads to the big bad’s plan. Doesn’t that make it hard for them to use magic in any story set in the Madman Universe? Also I did say the Kimmandoes don’t bother me yet. We’ll see how that goes, because even I have my limits. My favorite is Mary/Marie, though.
Recommendation: Don’t let lack of Best Scene fool you. There are some good moments although this was a bit more relaxed than usual. Still worth a read.
