Sonic Universe #52

Archie Comics (July, 2013)

“When Worlds Collide” part 5 “The Advance Guard”
WRITER: Ian Flynn
PENCILER: Tracy Yardley
INKER: Terry Austin
COLORIST: Thomas Mason
SELECTED COVER ART: Patrick “Spaz” Spaziante
LETTERER: A. Teuthis
EDITOR: Paul Kaminski

(continued from Mega Man #25) Sonic, Tails, Mega Man, Proto Man, and Rush arrive in the Skull Egg Zone and attempt to reach the Doctors’ fortress. First they must deal with Copy Robot and the Genesis Unit, whose name sparks a memory in Sonic. Of course our heroes succeed, with help from the weapon Mega Man got from “Tails Man” and a little bit of teamwork. Will it help them when the rest of the Roboticized Masters arrive…with the final Chaos Emerald? (continued in Sonic The Hedgehog #249)

What they got right: So Mega Man did get a weapon from deroboticising Tails. Nice they kept that in mind. The battles are well-drawn and the characters all get their moments good and bad. Also, as the heroes begin to get along, the villains begin to  fall apart. Sounds about right.

What they got wrong: Yardley still does her usual good work on the Sonic characters, but her inexperience with the Mega Man characters shows now and then. And are the robot Chao-Met two beings or one? Or are there two different combinations of Mets and Chaoes?

Recommendation: This continues to be a very enjoyable crossover. Recommended for fans of both series.

Honorable mention goes to Tails patting Sonic on the head.
