Yesterday we were introduced to the new Ranger police force of the future! Now that they’ve come together as a team, can they become a better team and prove that the “B” in B-Squad stands for “better watch out, criminal scum”? It’s part two of Linkara’s look at Power Rangers SPD.

- I don’t understand ANY part of the Omega Ranger’s backstory. This is one time when I think they should have stayed closer to the source material. Omega’s counterpart, DekaBreak, has an interesting story and actually becomes part of the team. Also, the idea of being turned into pure energy because of the time portal seems odd when you look at how many time Power Rangers have gone back in time as far back as the original Mighty Morphin’ team. Could it be hiding the fact that he’s supposed to be Sam? I don’t get that, either. Also, he gets a girlfriend that appears in one episode but we’ll get to her in part three.
- As much as I agree with Lewis’ points regarding the first team-up episode, I still prefer it to the next one. While it would have been nice to see Tommy and Trent, plus learn what happened to Anton and the others, the events that lead to this team-up (time-travel plot hole aside) felt more natural and believable. Perhaps if there had been more than one episode, but instead we get the second team-up where SPD goes back in time and more things bug me in that one. Plus this one takes place after their Ranger days instead of during so we get to see how strong the Dino Thunder team’s bond has become (again, missing Trent) since the early days when, much like SPD B-Squad, they didn’t quite get along but are now good friends.
- “Insomnia” may be my favorite clip show of any I’ve seen in Power Rangers. While many have forced an idea to make the clip show happen, including amnesia, “insomnia” actually shows the Rangers trying to see how far they’ve come as Rangers and as a team as well as figuring out at least part of Gruumm’s plan. That alone shows how far they’ve come as police officers that they can work together to examine evidence and figure out what their enemy is trying to do. It’s an example of a clip show done right and even Saban’s writers couldn’t pull off one that good.
In the final installment tomorrow we look at the other team-up story and go over the characters. I usually do that in the first part but there was a lot more to talk about with the story, which may make SPD one of my favorites along with In Space and Time Force. Stop by tomorrow for the epic conclusion.
