Wanna bet this is the only time we see her in the classic costume? I’m betting Benes gives her a chain-mail bikini.
He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe #5
DC Comics (October, 2013)
“Once Upon A Time” WRITER: Keith Giffen ARTIST: Pop Mhan COLORIST: Kahryn Layno COVER: Ed Benes, Alejandro Sicat, & Kathryn Layno LETTERER: Deron Bennett EDITOR: Michael McCalister
After getting tidbits from Teela and Zoar, Despera goes to her “mother”, Shadow Weaver, and learns the truth of her origins, as He-Man has from Sorceress’ spirit. As he (with Mechaneck tagging along) journeys to rescue Teela and his sister, Despara, now aware of her true identity of Adora, may be ending up on Teela’s side.
What they got right: While I’ll be complaining about the presentation in a moment, the updated origin of Adora isn’t bad. The backstory about the prophecy and how Hordak (through Skeletor) took her works for this version and it gives Shadow Weaver a personality as someone who loves and cares for Adora/Despera as a mother.
What they got wrong: So naturally she’s dead a few panels later. The explanation is as expositiony as it gets. (I don’t care if that isn’t a word.) We get a bit of visual but it’s like Giffen is just trying too hard to get Adora into She-Ra form as soon as he can, which may even be the point of this whole storyline. And if you think that means good things for female readers, you haven’t been paying attention to the New 52 or this series specifically. And what DID happen to Marlena anyway?
Recommendation: As this series goes it wasn’t a bad issue. However, the rest of the series makes it hard to recommend.

[…] taunting of Mekaneck and telling Adam they were never friends. You can find those reviews until I quit, so I didn’t even know how Despera became She-Ra in this continuity. That sounds incredibly […]
