Battlestar Galactica #3
Realm Press (March, 1998)
“Prison Of Souls” part 1 PLOT: Chris Scalf WRITER: James Kuhorix ARTISTS: Chris Scalf & Robert Scott LETTERER/PRODUCTION: Tanja Scalf PUBLISHER: Steve Atwell “BATTLESTAR GALACTICA” CREATOR: Glen Larson
Adama is having visions so strong that it has put him into a mild coma. The visions warn of a threat known as “Somnians”. Meanwhile, the fleet comes across a derelict cruiser that’s larger than the Battlestar. With it comes something that’s making various crewmembers afraid, including Baltar, whose guards are plotting a public execution. But is the threat smaller or bigger than the Cylons tracking them?
What they got right: This could have been a Halloween episode of the show. While I still have my issues with the airbrushed art in this case it kind of lends to the atmosphere. And I should give Scalf credit for getting the character models as close as legally possible in these comics.
What they got wrong: Since I’m actually praising the art style for this story I don’t have a complaint this round.
Recommendation: This one has three issues (two to come) before this series (but not Realm’s run) comes to a close and it’s all this arc. So far it looks promising, so it might be worth a look for classic BSG fans who also like a bit of the spooky stuff.
