Samurai Jack #1
IDW Publishing (October, 2013)
“Samurai Jack & The Threads Of Time” WRITER: Jim Zub ARTIST: Andy Suriano SELECTED COVER ART: Genndy Tartakovsky (although for all I know it’s old promo art and not done for IDW) LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Carlos Guzman ‘SAMURAI JACK” CREATOR: Genndy Tartakovsky
Jack finds an old man who tells him of the Rope Of Eons, which is how Aku learned time travel. Threads of it remain after Aku destroyed the rope and Jack is now on a mission to recover those remaining threads. The first one is at a coliseum and he’ll have to fight to claim his prize.
What they got right: The reason I posted the intro up there was to catch up new people to the Samurai Jack cartoon, and it’s included in the comic for the same reason. The art looks more like a comic than a cartoon but the character models are close enough to the TV model for me. Even the original characters are at least in keeping with Tartkovsky’s aesthetics. The story is also in line with something you’d see in the show,
What they got wrong: Why are there so many variant covers? I have my problems with variants to begin with but 10 different covers? That’s a bit much.
Recommendation: Fans of Samurai Jack rejoice! Jack is back and this comic should satisfy your fix until Cartoon Network becomes smart enough to restore the TV series. Yeah, that’s going to be a long wait, isn’t it?
