“Can we get the Wonder Twins back?”

Fanboy #3

DC Comics (May, 1999)

WRITER: Mark Evanier
ARTIST: Sergio Aragonés
“FINSTER’S FANTASIES” ARTISTS: Bill Sienkiewicz & Brent Anderson
COLORIST: Tom Luth
LETTERER: Todd Klein
EDITOR: Tony Bedard

Finster picks up a series of old EC comics from a guy named Zensie, which are stolen by the store’s resident shoplifter, Weasel. This makes Finster so mad that he goes purple Hulk on the guy, forcing the JLA to intervene. (Roll call: Steel, Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner this time), and Huntress.) It’s Sandy who calms him down, both in the fantasy and the real world, where she calls the cops. These same cops later arrest Finster when a anti-comic protester tricks him into selling an “adult” comic to a minor.

What they got right: This one is all on the art, mostly the fight between “The Incredible Finster!” and the Justice League. The regular art is also good, and I spotted the cameos by Sergio and Mark.

What they got wrong: I’ll talk more about the protest story next issue, but I don’t think it helps your message when Finster is fantasizing the very violent acts against the comic protestors that said protestors claims comics put in your head. Sure their case is they make you do it and are directly responsible, but we call those people idiots.

Analysis: This was probably the weaker of the six issues, since it’s more setting up the next storyline than Finster or anyone else learning anything. We’ve established that Finster is rather clever, so Sandy being the “hero” seems a tad off based on what we’ve learned. Still, it’s a fun story and sets up a very good next issue.
