Venom #4

Marvel Comics (July, 1995)

“Carnage Unleashed” part 4 “Can’t Get No Relief”
WRITER: Larry Hama
PENCILER: Andrew Wildman
INKER: Joe Rubinstein
COLORIST: Tom Smith
LETTERER: Ken Lopez
EDITOR: Eric Fein
GROUP EDITOR: Danny Fingeroth

I haven’t read the first three parts. Frankly I grabbed a bunch of “symbiote” related comics because I had created a symbiote hunter character thanks to the Fox show and I wanted to do research before trying to sell it to Marvel. Ah, the rank stupidity of youth. Anyway, I’m going through those now, although I think the comic I reviewed yesterday was one of those collector comic pack offerings.

So from what I can tell, some guy wants to turn Carnage into a video game and Venom wants to stop him. The fight ends up going into the internet (and broadcast on the big screen) because they’re fighting at the molecular level or something like that. Venom wins but instead of letting Cassady die (despite going on about wanting to kill him and this is Venom) he turns him over to the cops because Brock knows Cassady want to die and plans to deny him.

This is tough to review because I haven’t seen the other three parts of this storyline so I don’t have a clue what’s going on. The art is decent for the 90’s and Hama is at least trying to make a good Venom/Carnage fight. Sure, there’s proof that Hama doesn’t know how computers work, but there are writers today who don’t care how computers work for the sake of the story they want to tell. Also, I don’t know who the game creator’s lady friends are, who are actually the ones who defeat Cassady by setting the symbiote on fire, I know know game creator guy…it’s just kind of a mess.

Maybe the first three issues added to this would explain things but I don’t have the interest to track them down. I can’t really give a positive or negative recommendation because it kind of made no sense to me. I’m not sure what I can tell you.
