I don’t want to talk about this. But I don’t have another topic I have time to write about. So…Heroes.
I don’t watch the Olympics so I heard about this on Twitter. The new miniseries, entitled Heroes Reborn, not to be confused with Marvel’s event, is said to have some of the original cast (I haven’t heard any names) but from the way I heard it I couldn’t tell you if new Heroes would come up. Naturally no concepts have been mentioned since it isn’t coming until 2015. At best, this probably means something has been greenlit. But I just can’t bring myself to care.
I couldn’t get past the first half-season. Once the cheerleader was saved I stopped caring. This wasn’t the show I was hoping for. Sure, costumes would have been a plus and you’d think at least one of the people who developed powers would have considered doing so, at least for a few episodes before being talked out of it, but it was the fact that I didn’t care about the characters and there was surprisingly little crimefighting involved.
For the uninitiated, Heroes followed a group of people who developed superpowers and didn’t really use them. A half-handful of people did but one hid his powers for political gains, going so far as pulling a Mutant Registration Act on other superpowered people to further his career. The show was boring to me in the beginning and from what I hear the story just went into nighttime soap areas. Basically, X-Men. And I don’t like the X-Men that much.
The only character I really got into was Hiro, which today I’m seeing people complaining about as being a Japanese stereotype. My problem with that POV is that there were a few Japanese people, including Hiro’s best friend (another main cast member) and his father (who turned out to be part of the shadow government group..in America..and played by George Takei) who didn’t follow that mold. Hiro was just happy to be part of something bigger and being able to help people. He’s a calmer version of Peter but more fun to watch and with more personality. Plus we see him grown when his girlfriend dies despite his trying to save her. I wanted to care about Peter and I did care about Claire until she was saved. Then the only interesting thing I heard about her was she kissed a girl. (Sweeps week?)
Otherwise I didn’t like the character, it wasn’t a superhero story (powers alone do not make superheroes/supervillains) and I was bored watching the first half. Too many subplots and following people who may or may not join the group…if there was an official group.
So I have no plans to watch Heroes Reborn unless I’m paid to do so and I probably won’t bring it up again unless forced to. Frankly, I don’t even know why they’re bringing it back? I’m sure it has a cult following but not with most of the people I know. Are you excited for this?
