Now that the villain behind Winged Victory’s frame job is revealed, the goal of the Confessor and the Samaritan is to find out how and where Karnazon is hiding. Although that boy that ended up in Samothrace may have solved that one. Meanwhile, Vic meets one of the Council of Nike, the group of women responsible for choosing her to become Winged Victory.
What they got right: I like how the story is going. It isn’t about the mystery (which is good because there are no clues we can follow although Busiek appears to know how the framing is being done) but Winged Victory and how she’s handling it. While we see The Confessor and his agents, the Choirboys, trying to clear her name and The Samaritan, Vic’s boyfriend, is frustrated because there’s nothing he can do to help his girlfriend, but the story is about Winged Victory and how she’s dealing with losing her life’s work.
What they got wrong: Not even a throwaway line about who the heck Karnazon is or why he wants to frame and capture Winged Victory. I don’t know what’s going on because I haven’t been able to keep up with the Astro City universe so I have no idea what the deal is with this guy. Does he have a romantic interest in her? Has she stopped his plans one too many times? Is there something else? Even narration exposition, just one paragraph, could explain enough that I understand the threat.
Recommendation: One minor complaint (that granted needed a lot of sentences to fully explain) does not stop me from enjoying a good story, or recommending you pick it up.
