Nightwing #14
DC Comics (November, 1997)
“Dead Meat” WRITER: Chuck Dixon PENCILER: Scott McDaniel INKER: Karl Story COLORIST: Roberta Tewes SEPARATOR: Jamison LETTERER: John Costanza ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Darren Vincenzo EDITOR: Scott Peterson
Nightwing and Batman escape the bad guys but having a falling out when Nightwing accuses Batman of not trusting him. However, they have a chance to patch their differences thanks to Alfred…and “Matches Malone”. Meanwhile, Blockbuster calls on Lady Vic and another assassin, Stallion, to hunt the two heroes just as Oracle finds the proof the heroes need.
What they got right: I like seeing Dick and Bruce’s relationship isn’t perfect but they still care about each other as friends and fellow superheroes. I like the contrast between the two.
What they got wrong: The art is still terrible, Lady Vic’s costume is still ugly and Stallion’s ripping off Rio Blast from the Masters Of The Universe toys is lame. We get two pages of Clancy and somebody called John Law talking about the local vigilante not realizing he’s across the street in an abandoned building and do you care? Nobody does, and he never amounted to anything. Get his story over with because we don’t need him in this story. Those pages were better spent on the main story or the Dick/Bruce subplot.
Recommendation: It’s hard to recommend this one thanks to the pacing and artwork while the story is mildly interesting. I wouldn’t chase you away from it, but I can’t point you towards it, either.
