My thanks to The Hawkeye Initiative for indirectly boosting readership. Seriously, this scan gets quite a bit of travel.
There’s an argument that sex is a beautiful thing (this isn’t the part I disagree with) so we should depict it in every perverted way possible (here’s the wrong part!). This leads to not only softcore porn but to female superheroes drawn in sexy poses that make no sense And kind of ruin the story for official cheesecake fanart. Comics Alliance contributor David Brothers wrote a three part look at this mistake, and how to do “sexy” right.
- First is a comparison between noted cheesecake maker Ed Benes and fellow artist Cliff Chiang
- Then two different depictions of Psylocke. You have Greg Land, known for using porn and other images as
tracing materical“inspiration”, and Jerome Opeña, showing Marvel gets it as wrong as DC. - So what’s a GOOD example of sexuality in sueprhero comics? Brothers uses Adam Warren’s Empowered as a guide.
