All of the survivors make it off of Site B, but the cost is very high. Our hunter, having lost his partner in hunting, has decided to hang it up because he’s “spent enough time in the company of death”. However, Peter takes a T-Rex to San Francisco and the result is every monster movie ever before Ian and Sarah find a way to get it back to the island.
What they got right: The art is good and the story ended satisfactory enough. While it felt like a bit more compression happened there wasn’t enough left for a 5th issue so outside of adding pages there wasn’t much they could do. It works well enough.
What they got wrong: I couldn’t get through the book because I have a weak stomach (and made the mistake of reading it while I was eating, since I had no such problem with the first book) so I don’t know if the boat crashing scene is from there, too, but there are so many questions that have been asked about the movie that fits here, too. How did the T-Rex eat all those guys if the hold door was still closed. In the caption for the cover I referenced the fun comic T-Rex Trying but the gag is truth here. There’s no way to open or close that hold. Also, if the T-Rex somehow got into the control room despite no visual damage to it, why did the boat continue on? How did it hit the exact spot it was going to land? Coincidences like that do happen in the real world, but it doesn’t work in fiction.
Recommendation: It’s not a bad comic but it’s no replacement for the movie or possibly the original novel. The four-parter is worth a look if you happen upon it but if you didn’t like the movie you might not like this, either.
I need a new subject for the Wednesday offering and I think I know what it will be. Tune in next week for….Godzilla Wednesday! It’s time to review the Marvel and Dark Horse comics I have, although most of the Marvel reviews will come from the black&white reprint collection The Essential Godzilla. I’m also missing some of the Dark Horse specials, including Charles Barkley. I have the Hero Zero crossover, though.
